Laying off your job to travel the world is certainly feasible but it takes planning. It’s particularly true when you have a slew of material goods, debt, and amongst other things that could hold you back from traveling or even worse – force you to go back home while you’re traveling. Planning does get aggravating and overwhelming however the process may also be quite rewarding.
- Are sure you wan to travel? Ever traveled abroad before? Before flipping yourself around, go on a few short trips to test the waters. It’d suck to understand that you just in fact dislike long-term traveling when you’re already out there.
- Clean up your debt. While you’re still earning a decent pay, pay off just as much debt as possible. I don’t recommend abandoning your career before you could repay as least most of your debt. It’s going to be there so pay it off.
- Have a general plan and exit strategy. I despise plans and I’m generally lazy to bother with them though this, I was the opposite. I had all of it laid out and was determined to let absolutely nothing stop me. I knew how long it was going to take to pay everything off, when I planned to leave, how much cash I’d have, why I wanted to quit, and where I wanted to go to. It helped put things into perspective about how long I needed to be at my job just before I gave notice. The plan ought to be reliable and well written out for your own reference.
- Use your companies health insurance. Try to make every possible session for health checkups, teeth cleaning, medications, eye checks, and everything else is covered. Point out you’ll be traveling around the world when they may suggest particular shots. If you wear eye glasses, get a second backup pair.
- Get information about your 401k and any share you might have invested in the company. Check if there are any costs for withdrawing your 401k if you decide to do so. Some corporations may require you to keep investing in a specific amount on a monthly basis to maintain your 401k. Some charges for withdrawing range up to 20% for tax then another 10% for early withdrawal from the total you’ve raised. It’s a hefty amount and should be reviewed thoroughly.
- Tidy up your desk and empty your personal computer. Work pc and everything around it is officially company property. Wipe out and backup whatever you feel is important. The moment you give notice, don’t be amazed to lose use of most of the things you had before.
- Work at home an option? When you have a situation that does the majority of the work on online, it doesn’t hurt to try to ask if you could work on the move. You’ll get a steady income while on a trip. If they’re not able to do this, well you would quit anyway. This works best if you provide them two choices letting them know you have the desire to travel and either they can employ you to work remotely or you’ll be required to leave the company.
- Two week notice or maybe more? Some businesses need a minimum of a two week notice prior to leaving. As a result of conflict of interest, you may not wish to give more than 2 weeks but that relies on the company you’re employed for. If I had provided my company more than fourteen days or if they had any tip that I was going to leave, the company would have laid me off. Just be nice when you give them notice.
- Prepare yourself for the speech. Easiest way to quit is to be truthful. It’s gonna be an extended weary reaction as to why you’d want to quit so put together to reply to a lot of questions. Ultimately, most will likely say they wish they could do the same.
- Quit with dignity. Get out of on good terms. Work as normal. Don’t start to bad mouth every person and start showing up late just because you’re leaving. I know you’re exciting regarding your trip and to finally leave but don’t forget to stay professional. Not only because of karma but because you’re greater than that.
