Whale Season in Maui, Hawaii

Hawaii does not have ‘weather’ seasons like many places on earth. What Hawaii has is Humpback Whale Season. This is the time period when all people living within the islands look forward to seeing their “first whale” of the season. Kind of like experiencing the first snow of the season, it’s usually exciting to spot that first whale in the waters all around the island.

The Humpback Whales make their way from icy waters, Alaska, to Hawaii yearly. The first whale is usually seen in late November and the last whale can be viewed leaving the islands early May. The Humpback Whales populate all the Hawaiian island’s but often gather more around the island of Maui. The not deep coastline waters around Maui give the whales an ideal location to birth their calves and train them the way to swim. The visitors to Maui, as well the island residents, enjoy sitting on the beach or lanai (balcony) and watching the activity between the mother’ and calve. The mother shows the newborn the way to breach (jump) from the water or how to slap its fin on the water. The newborn copies the Mom’s behavior and often, like children, gets carried away with the activity.

The Humpbacks are quite acrobatic, frequently breaching out of the ocean and sloshing the water when they come back down. Usually the whales stick their tails from the water and slap it on the surface creating a huge spray. This is actually the type of fun whale watching activity that people like to witness. The only way to know that a whale is in the area is by the tail slapping, breaching or spouting air out of its blow hole. The humpback whale is definitely the star of the whale watching period in Maui as well as other islands. There are catamarans, zodiacs and huge boats offering whale watching daily for all islands. There isn’t a best time of day to whale watch so schedule the trip when it’s easy for you and your family. Some boats assure whale sighting or else you get another free excursion so make sure you ask when you make the reservation. The size of the whale is up to 45 feet long and weighs in at approximately 40 tons. If you have an up close view of the magnificent mammal breaking from the water it will make you speechless. The mature humpback whales will frequently come to the boat and look at you. They’re curious animals which have learned to feel protected in Hawaiian waters.

If you choose to have a snorkeling trip you can incorporate marine activities and do a snorkel or dive trip to Molokini and look at the humpback whale’s at no charge. Besides seeing the whales you’ll be able to hear the whales humming to one another beneath water. When you’re snorkeling, diving or just swimming be sure and listen for the singing sound from the whales. The humpback whales would be the noisiest and most imaginative whales when contemplating songs. They’ve got long complex, eerie, and beautiful songs which include familiar sequences of squeaks, grunts, as well as other sounds. It’s the most wonderful sound to listen for underwater. You just want to hang there and listen to these huge, beautiful animals and their musical songs.
